New: Opus oléa high polyphenol olive oil

Jake here! As some of you may have noticed, we have a new featured oil on our homepage: Opus Oléa by Opus Live Well.

Recently I’ve been chatting with Astrid Liakou, founder of Opus Live Well, and have been really impressed with their high polyphenol oil. It’s produced in Greece with 100% Koroneiki olives and held to higher regulations than certain other oil brands.

Astrid also told me about how Opus Live Well has a strong focus on quality and authenticity—it’s easy to see why they won Gold Quality Awards from a panel of experts at the London International Olive Oil Competition, the largest of its kind in Europe.

Possibly even more impressive than its 484 mg/Kg polyphenol count is the oil’s low acidity levels of 0.3%. Acidity values like this only come about when the olives are handled carefully and milled to extract the oil within hours of harvest. Low acidity levels like this help to increase an oil’s shelf life so you can continue to enjoy the health benefits of the polyphenols within for longer.

What’s more, Astrid also talked about the importance of properly filtering high polyphenol olive oils. This makes sure small particles of olive solids are removed, as these are often the first to oxidize in the oil—turning it rancid quicker and taking away all of its positive attributes. These same solids are also responsible for igniting and burning faster when the oil is used in cooking. Opus Oléa has been strictly mechanically filtered so you can be sure that it has both a long shelf life and high smoke point (if you choose to cook with it). It’s also worth noting that absolutely no chemicals are used when growing or extracting the oil from the olives used in Opus.
